Photojournalist from Council Bluffs. Writing sonnets. Cheering AI.

I was born in Omaha, Neb., towards the end of the Nixon administration. Gerald Ford was born here too. The reuben sandwich was invented here. It’s beautiful in April; there are lilacs everywhere then. Black squirrels interrupt your walks.

Made in Omaha

Like Jerry, I am a sailor and a combat veteran. “Wolverine” has an aircraft carrier named after him. Though I lack that honor, I am an NPPA-trained photojournalist and editor with 1000+ hours of time in the bay. Much of that time was done when I was a sailor.

Education

My journey from the plains to the sea began at the University of South Dakota, where I studied American history under Dr. Leonard R. Bruguier and was convinced that I needed to explore the world before finishing my formal education. After earning NCAA all-American honors as a track athlete, I left South Dakota and joined the United States Navy. After my naval service, I earned my B.A. in English from Iowa State University.

I believe that virtue is attained through mindfulness and kindness. My intention is to spend the rest of my mortal days helping to reduce suffering.
